Gamepopper at Eurogamer

Hello everyone!

On Thursday and Friday, I’ll be at Eurogamer Expo in London. You’ll most likely find me either at the Microsoft Booth or the GamesIndustry Fair as I’m helping out with their Windows 8 promotions. Sadly I won’t have Secret of Escape ready for exhibition, but I’ll be showing it off at the Loading Bar in Soho as part of Indie Haven’s Indie Games Event.

So you may or may not see me, but feel free to visit Microsoft’s booth or the GamesIndustry Fair anyway, as well as the many other things there such as the conferences, the new and old games, the indie games display and many more! I’ll be writing about my time during the weekend, so stay tuned!

Ludum Dare 27: Results are in!

Judging for Ludum Dare 27 officially ended at almost midnight last night. As such I figured it would be best to finally give my post-mortem, show my score and reveal my favourite games from this Ludum Dare all in one post!

My first LAUNCH Conference

So for those who don’t follow me on Facebook or Twitter, I was at the LAUNCH Studio Showcase. It took place at the Innovation Birmingham Campus, near Aston University, and it had indie game developers from around the Midlands. It was the first time I attended one of these indie game developer meetups, aside from expos and the Windows Game Ambassador meetups, and such would be a good opportunity to meet some other indie developers, as well as a chance to show off my work.

GBJam Summary

So it’s been a few weeks, so I figured I’d show you some of my favourite games from the passing GBJam. Of course there are many brilliant submissions (including the one I was involved with :P), but here are just some of the great ones that appeared.

Unity 4.2 and the Windows Contest

So yesterday it was announced that the latest stable release of Unity has come in the form of Unity 4.2. Among all the new enhancements such as real time shadow mapping, Unity is allowing deployment to Windows 8 and Windows Phone for FREE!

This is great news for Unity devs and Windows 8 devs like me and Ben (Nostrum Key), since we can now officially export GridLocked to Windows 8 at no extra cost!

All the info can be found here: http://blogs.unity3d.com/2013/07/22/unity-4-2-has-arrived/

In related news, to celebrate the announcement, Microsoft and Unity have partnered up to create the Unity Windows Contest. Make a game or interactive app in Unity 4, and be in with the chance to win up to $30,000 each on two categories, Windows Store or Windows Phone! Not to mention, there are honourable mentions such as best gameplay, best port or best new game content that can win you a free Unity 4 Pro License with the Windows Store Pro deployment!

GBJam Week is Over!

Yep, over 6 hours ago, the deadline passed. and Alex Earley posted up the current version of our game Star Runner! The game is in alpha stages, as it is a very ambitious project for us and unfortunately, not all of what we want to include couldn’t be done in the time we have. However, the team are still planning on continuing our work, so keep an eye out on the GBJam page for the most recent updates.

“The game will follow a galactic star hunter seeking to find the most precious energy source in entire universe, baby stars. These baby stars are called starlettes. They are an ancient race that form the bright burning suns of our worlds. In their infancy they must bond together in an ancient ritual to become a star. Our hero must decide will he help the starlettes to become a huge atom smashing machine of incandescent plasma? or will he use their ability to burn hydrogen into helium for his own selfish needs…

We really wanted to release by the deadline, but the project proved to be too ambitious for our personal lives. We plan on releasing future versions. Currently you can explore about half of our world. In future releases we plan on including music and FX, puzzles, NPC’s and a truly epic story. If you browse the source files you can get a preview of what a lot of that will be =D

Stay tuned!” – Alex Earley

Help a good DJ out!

Hello everyone! My Midsummer Jam Week Entry, “Secret of Escape” is going very well, and you can see the update posts I’ve made on the Facebook page. Right now I’d like to take a moment to recommend you to do something.

A good friend of mine and a talented musician/DJ, Lyserdigi, is taking part in a contest on MixCloud, specifically the Cafe Mambo Balearic Down Tempo DJ Contest.

You may recognise him as the person who composed the theme to BOOM: Fireworks Defence Unit, as well as helped source out the sound effects that would be used.

What he wants, in order for his mix to be short listed, is for his mix below to be viewed and played over 50 times. Make sure to give a good comment out and like it if you can, the more the merrier! So help a friend and musician out! And lets all hope he goes through!
